A project portfolio is a collection of projects and programs that are all linked and related through a certain business strategy or objective. An organization groups certain projects and programs into a portfolio to track their performance as a group. For example, all IT development projects and programs could be grouped into one portfolio while all maintenance projects may be grouped into another. Alternatively, all IT development and maintenance projects and programs pertaining to a single Line of Business (LOB) may be grouped into one portfolio. These decisions depend on the overall business strategy.
