Quality Assurance is the process by which the quality of a product is maintained throughout the delivery process. The focus of quality assurance is to prevent defects. This is accomplished by having a feedback loop that incorporates quality feedback into the process to prevent further defects. Quality Assurance, therefore, has two components. The first being having a process that ensures a quality product. This is accomplished by following certain quality standards. The second part is ensuring that there are controls in place to measure deviation from the norms.
Quality Assurance differs from Quality Control in that Quality Control checks quality after the fact as opposed to the Quality Assurance process that following the DIRFT principle that stands for Do It Right The First Time.
Projects and programs that have extensive quality requirements document a Quality Assurance Project Plan and document steps to ensuring the building of the quality of the project deliverables and outcomes.
