According to a latest press release, Gartner is predicting that 80 Percent of Today’s Project Management tasks (including PPM functions) will be eliminated by 2030 as Artificial Intelligence takes over.

They base this on the fact that functions such as data collection, tracking, and reporting, will be taken over by AI.

We know Project Management is a little more than those functions but Gartner may be referring to the fact that all PM and PPM practices, processes, etc. that actually involve the above will be impacted.

For many organizations, this should not come as a surprise because they should be automating such tasks anyway. For example, PMs definitely shouldn’t be using their talent and expertise in manual data extraction, creating reports manually, etc. A relatively small investment in automation today (without the use of sophisticated AI technologies) can save organizations a lot of time and effort.

Also, if your organization has a lot of historical PM and PPM data, it may be worthwhile for you to start exploring how to derive insights from that data in an effort to improve your organization’s overall PM capability and maturity.

In essence, contemporary technologies can be used by a large percentage of organizations to up their PM capabilities even today. Done methodically and intelligently (and without applying AI), organizations can also be doing more with less (yes, in the PM function).

Gartner is also predicting that by the year 2030 “using conversational AI and chatbots, PPM and PMO leaders can begin to use their voices to query a PPM software system and issue commands, rather than using their keyboard and mouse.”

Until then there is still a lot that can be and needs to be done without worrying about AI taking over those functions.
