A Center of Excellence (CoE) is a group, usually established within the organization focused on a certain specialty that acts as a subject matter expert and standards body for the organization. An organization establishes a Center of Excellence (CoE) as a focal point for the standardization and compilation of best practices that can be shared with the rest of the organization interested in that subject area. A Center of Excellence (CoE) maintains best practices, standards, tools, techniques, and other related areas of knowledge related to that specialty and disseminates that knowledge to the rest of the organization. For example, in the context of project management, a PMO usually acts as the Center of Excellence (CoE). For other subject areas where the organization is in the early stages of maturing its capabilities, it may establish other dedicated Centers of Excellence.
