More than a PMP – How are Project Manager careers changing in the digital world?

In this presentation, we will be focusing on how digital and the move to digital within organizations are changing the discipline of Project management and Program Management and how that in turn is impacting the Project Manager careers. Everyone knows that digital is having a serious and real impact on all levels of societies and organizations. Accordingly, it’s also having a MAJOR impact on people’s careers. And we in the profession of project and program management are not immune to this.

So, what is that impact and what skills do project and program managers need in this new economy? Let’s take a look at it briefly in this presentation.

PM CAREERS FACT CHECK

First, let’s review three facts related to how Project Manager careers are being impacted.

All top notch consulting and research organizations including Gartner, McKinsey, Accenture, and others have been telling us for a while now that the traditional practices of Project Management are NOT going to be enough in the new digital world. Project Managers and other managers and leaders MUST learn new skills to qualify for the new generation of jobs that are being posted daily. This fact can be easily confirmed by looking at LinkedIn job postings and seeing the additional skills that employers are asking of their candidates.

Second, let’s understand that digital is for REAL. It’s here and it’s here to stay. We live in a world that is going through a continuous and deep digital transformation. And managing projects and programs in the digital environment is different and requires new and specialized knowledge and expertise in the area of methods, processes, technologies, and tools. So, regardless of your background and regardless whether you come from a technical background or not, to lead and manage initiatives in this new economy requires those new knowledge and skills.

The third fact highlighted by many career research organizations is that employers are opting to go with hiring management and leaders, who have the right skills irrespective of the number of years of experience that they have. So, when confronted with a choice of a Project Manager with many years of experience but who doesn’t have the new Project Manager skills and one with fewer years of experience but having the right skills, they are opting to go with the candidate with the right knowledge and skills.

THE PM CAREER SHIFT

So, we can easily say that the traditional PMP types of skills are no longer sufficient by themselves in this new economy. This has become quite obvious to the PMP certified project managers who have been looking for jobs within the past couple of years. We clearly see the trends changing where Project Managers are now required to know of advanced and complex program management skills, digital transformation skills and how to run those types of projects, and most important of all they are required to know how to think strategically and how to apply those skills to their workplace to be successful in their careers.
